Nature At Its Finest: Natural Ways To Clean Your Teeth

Posted on: 5 June 2015

Your dentist has probably told you that you need to brush with a fluoride toothpaste and floss your teeth everyday.  But what if there were other methods to keep your teeth clean?  Mother Nature has a wide variety of natural ways to keep your mouth healthy and fresh.

Chewing Sticks

Before toothbrushes were invented, individuals used chewing sticks to clean their teeth.  The chewing devices were made out of twigs from trees.  The Miswak tree is widely hailed for its antiseptic abilities and is similar to anti-plaque products in the stores.  To make a chewing stick, you should find a twig that is three to five millimeters in diameter.  Then, remove a little bark from the end of the twig.  Next, chew the bark-less part of the twig until it frays and resembles a brush.  To keep the chewing stick in good condition, you should wash it and keep it moist.

Green Tea

Green tea contains plant-based polyphenol antioxidants that help diminish plaque, cavities, and gum disease.  Along with drinking green tea, you can also make a simple rinse that will help keep your teeth clean.  Simply brew your tea, allow it to cool, and then swish and gargle with the tea for up to several minutes.

Baking Soda and Strawberries

The combination of baking soda and strawberries is a powerful tooth cleanser.  The malic acid in the strawberries acts as an astringent to remove superficial stains and make your teeth whiter.  To make a simple paste, mash up the strawberry and combine it with the baking soda.  Next, apply the mixture to your teeth and leave it there for about five minutes.  Use a toothbrush to remove the mixture.  In addition, you may need to floss to remove any strawberry seeds.  Be mindful that these two ingredients are abrasive.  For this reason, you should only use this cleanser once a week.

Mint

Mint is an ingredient that is used in many commercial toothpastes and mouth rinses.  Yet, using mint leaves can help clean your teeth while banishing bad breath.  To make a simple mint paste, you'll want to mash up the leaves and then mix it with sea salt.  You can use a damp toothbrush to brush your pearly whites with the paste.  In addition, for a natural mint mouth rinse, you can boil mint leaves, sea salt, and ginger in water.  After it cools, you can use it to rinse your way to cleaner teeth and fresher breath.

Fancy toothpaste and mouthwashes may be convenient.  However, the next time your teeth feel grimy, you may want to turn to Mother Nature for a cleaner mouth. For further assistance, contact a local dentist, such as Kokkirala Rajeshwer.

They require a dental team that makes children feel safe and secure at every appointment. The pediatric dental staff also needs to understand how to work with parents as well as young patients. As a pediatric dental hygienist and a mom, I understand that specific needs of children when they are visiting the dentist. This blog will explain exactly what kids need from a dental staff and will give options for making the dental office a welcoming environment to children.
