3 Spices That Can Help Alleviate Dental Implant Pain

Posted on: 10 December 2015

A dental implant can be a great way to replace a damaged or decayed tooth. Since the process of setting a dental implant is quite involved, you should plan on experiencing some pain during the recovery period following your appointment.

If you don't want to rely on prescription medications to help ease the pain of your dental implant, here are three spices you can turn to for relief as the tissue in your mouth heals.

1. Garlic

When a dental implant becomes infected, the amount of pain you feel could skyrocket. If you want to control your pain and prevent infection at the same time, you might want to grab a clove of garlic. When crushed, garlic releases a chemical compound known as allicin.

Research shows that allicin has the ability to disable the enzymes created by bacteria that are responsible for causing damage. Although placing a clove of crushed garlic directly on the affected area could cause a burning sensation, your pain should subside fairly quickly.

2. Clove

Clove (particularly clove oil) can be a powerful ally when it comes to treating pain after receiving a dental implant. Dentists themselves commonly use clove oil in their practices to help alleviate inflammation and as an antiseptic. Clove oil is made of 85% to 90% eugenol. It is this eugenol that is responsible for providing clove oil with its medicinal benefits.

To use clove oil to alleviate pain after a dental implant, mix a few drops into a glass of warm water. Swish the water in your mouth, allowing the solution to come into contact with the affected area. Repeat as often as necessary to keep your pain level in check as you heal from a dental implant in the future.

3. Turmeric

While you might not cook with turmeric on a regular basis, keeping this spice in your spice rack can be beneficial when you are trying to recover from a dental implant. Turmeric is an effective anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant due to the curcumin found in this spice. The curcumin gives turmeric its bright yellow color, and can also help relieve pain by reducing the amount of inflammation you experience when healing from a dental implant.

To enjoy the natural pain relief turmeric can provide, massage some ground turmeric that has been roasted directly onto the implant.

Finding natural ways to control your pain will help you avoid relying on prescription medications following a dental implant. Contact a dentist, like Elma Family Dental, for more information.
