How To Manage The Symptoms After Dental Implant Surgery If You Don't Like Using Over-The-Counter Medications

Posted on: 8 February 2016

After you have your dental implants surgically placed, you are going to notice pain, swelling and bleeding in and around your gum line. While this is completely normal, it is still a bother to have to deal with. If you are not someone who likes to use over-the-counter medications, it may seem like you have to deal with the pain alone, but you don't. There are different, more natural and safe, methods that you can use in order to stop the pain and swelling and reduce the bleeding around your gum line.

Swelling

One of the first symptoms you will experience after your dental implant surgery is swelling. To reduce the amount of swelling, you can simply use cucumbers. Cucumbers are full of active properties that help reduce swelling around the gum line. Cut a cucumber into fine circles and place them in between your cheek and your gum line. Keep the slices in place for up to ten minutes and let the juice soak into your gums or until you notice your swelling is going down. As an added bonus, the cool temperature of the cucumber will also help to relieve a little bit of the pain you are experiencing as well.

Pain

One of the main reasons that your gums are in so much pain, aside from being cut into, is that they are severely inflamed. You can reduce the inflammation in your gums by applying a little garlic to them. Garlic is full of an anti-fungal called allicin, which is great for your mouth while it is healing from the surgery, because it will also protect your mouth against bacteria and infection.

To use garlic to reduce your gum pain, mash four garlic cloves and a little olive oil until you have formed a thick paste. Apply this paste, either with your finger or a clean cotton swab, directly to your gum line. You can leave this concoction in place for about fifteen minutes before rinsing it away with a mind mouthwash.

Bleeding

Bleeding is very normal after you undergo dental implant surgery. It could last up to four to five days before you notice that it is subsiding. While you are waiting for the bleeding to stop, you can simply drink a cup of black tea twice daily. Black tea is not only a natural antioxidant, but it is also full of tannic acid, which reduces gum bleeding.

Black tea is really the gift that keeps on giving when it comes to gum bleeding because you can drink it once in the morning and once at night, and you can apply the used tea bag directly to your gums and allow the tannic acid to seep in.

Pain, bleeding and swelling are all normal symptoms to experience after undergoing dental implant surgery. Just because you don't like to use over-the-counter medication, does not mean that you have to brave these symptoms alone. Using one of the safe and effective methods listed above, you will be able to enjoy more of your day after the implants have been set in place.
