Caring For Your Dentures

Posted on: 29 April 2016

If you are going to be getting dentures, then you want to make sure you prepare for them by learning about their proper care and maintenance. Dentures are a very good option for replacing some, or even all, of the teeth you may be missing. However, there is some daily maintenance you need to provide them with to keep them in good shape and things you should do to prevent breakage. This article will walk you through the process of caring for dentures and inform you of behaviors you should avoid when wearing them or caring for them.

Clean them daily

It's important for you to clean your dentures at the end of each day. If you don't they can become stained and they can harbor bacteria and other germs that can cause you to develop gum disease. You want to use a paste that is approved for dentures and brush all the surfaces of the dentures with it. After you are done brushing them, rinse them off completely and store them in a case that closes and is filled with a soaking solution intended for dentures. Always close the lid tightly and set them where they won't be accidentally knocked over, so you don't have to worry about them breaking.

Before you go to put your dentures back in, you want to rinse off the soaking solution. Since you brushed them to store them, there is no need to brush them again. You should always put a washcloth down in the sink and fill it with some water before you clean your dentures. This way, there is less risk of them breaking if you accidentally drop them in the sink.

Wearing your dentures

If you feel as if your dentures have too much movement when you have them in, talk to your dentist about whether or not you should be using denture adhesive. If you decide to use it, you only want to put a few small dots of the adhesive along the inner part of the dentures that go against your gums and put the dentures in place. Gently press on them for a minute to allow the adhesive to bond correctly.

There are certain foods you should avoid eating with dentures, such as very hard foods that can break them. Also, sticky foods will pull on them and create problems with the way they fit on your gums. Steer clear of foods like ice, nuts, tough meat and gum, all of these can be bad for your dentures.

Any time you have concerns about your dentures, you should take them in to have them looked at, so you don't risk them getting really damaged.

They require a dental team that makes children feel safe and secure at every appointment. The pediatric dental staff also needs to understand how to work with parents as well as young patients. As a pediatric dental hygienist and a mom, I understand that specific needs of children when they are visiting the dentist.
