Tips For Dealing With Dentures When You're Young
Posted on: 30 July 2016
If you think of a person who has dentures, you likely imagine someone who is relatively old. You likely do not imagine someone in their twenties or thirties. However, people in their twenties and thirties can also experience situations where they need to get dentures in order to better chew their food or look like they have a healthy smile. Here are some tips for dealing with dentures when you are young.
1. If You've Just Had Your Teeth Removed, Go With Immediate Dentures
If you have just had your teeth removed, ask your doctor for immediate dentures to tide you over until you are able to get your permanent dentures. You cannot get permanent dentures for a few months after your teeth have been removed because your gums are going to need to heal and grow. If you are young, you might feel angst over the idea of being toothless during this period, since you might need to give presentations or woo a significant other. Talk to your doctor about getting immediate dentures that can go into your mouth right after surgery.
2. Enlist a Friend for Conversation Muscle Strengthening
When you first get your dentures put in, you won't be able to speak as easily as you did before. The reason for this is that you will need to use different muscles to form words and make sounds when you have dentures in than you did without dentures. It is going to take a little bit of time for these muscles to get stronger. You can aid the process by enlisting the help of a friend who you feel comfortable with to speak with you for extended periods of time and help build those muscles. The worst thing that you can do is clam up because you are too embarrassed by how hard it is for you to talk because then your muscles will not get stronger.
3. Be Safe When Eating
When you first start eating, take it slow. Avoid hard and sticky foods that could cling to your dentures or break them. Cut all of your food up into small pieces. Avoid foods that need a lot of manual manipulation to get into your mouth, such as corn on the cob or noodles. If you are going to a lunch interview, be sure that you choose your foods especially carefully in order to avoid embarrassing yourself. After a few weeks, you will get used to eating food with your new dentures and will not have to be as careful.
