How Dentists Can Diagnose Diseases Through Oral Exams

Posted on: 23 February 2021

It is important that you see your family dentist regularly for teeth cleanings and examinations. When dental and gum problems are recognized and treated quickly, they are less likely to progress. Not only can your dentist diagnose dental and gum problems, but they may also be able to diagnose systemic illness. Here are some oral signs that your dentist may discover during your oral examination that may indicate certain diseases.

Gingival Abnormalities

If your oral examination reveals gingival pallor, your dental professional may suspect the presence of iron-deficient anemia. Gingival pallor, otherwise known as pale gums, may also be accompanied by a pale tongue and pallor of the lining of your inner cheeks.

During your examination, your dentist will gently probe your gum tissue to see if they bleed easily. Pale gums, in association with easy bleeding and significant inflammation, may indicate a blood platelet problem or hematologic disease.

While gingival abnormalities can mean that you have anemia or a blood disorder, your dentist may tell you that these conditions are generally associated with other symptoms such as fatigue, shortness of breath, and abnormal bruising.

White Spots

If your dentist finds white spots in your mouth, they may suspect the presence of a candidiasis infection related to diabetes. People who have high blood sugar levels may be prone to candidiasis, or yeast infections. An oral yeast infection causes white patches to develop on your tongue and back of your throat. If your dental health provider sees a white patch on your tongue, they will gently scrape it with a tongue depressor or dental tool.

The patches from oral yeast infections typically bleed when gently scraped. While your dentist can prescribe an oral anti-fungal rinse, they will refer you back to your primary care physician for further evaluation that may include a diabetes workup.

Your dental professional may tell you that while oral yeast infections are generally the result of uncontrolled diabetes, they can also occur in those people whose diabetes is well-managed. You will also be instructed to follow your diabetic diet and limit your consumption of sugar because it is thought that yeast microorganisms thrive in the presence of high glucose concentrations inside the mouth.

If you experience any unusual oral signs and symptoms, make an appointment with your family dentist. Once the cause of oral problems is diagnosed, both your dental healthcare provider and primary care physician can develop treatment plans.

As a pediatric dental hygienist and a mom, I understand that specific needs of children when they are visiting the dentist.
